Centuries from KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant powered India into a commanding position on Day 4 of the first Test at Headingley, setting England a daunting target of 371 runs with all to play for on the final day.
Rahul, composed and clinical, scored a magnificent 137, his eighth Test century abroad and his first at the historic Leeds venue. At the other end, Rishabh Pant delivered another unforgettable knock, reaching his second hundred of the match with trademark audacity and flair. His 118, laced with counter-attacking intent, made him only the second wicketkeeper in Test history to score centuries in both innings of a Test, joining Andy Flower in that elite club.
The pair added 195 runs for the fifth wicket, taking the game away from England in the morning and afternoon sessions. While England struck late through Josh Tongue, who picked up three wickets in four balls to clean up the tail, India’s second-innings total of 364 ensured a massive lead of 370 runs.
In reply, England openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley survived a tricky five-over spell before stumps, reaching 21 without loss. But with 350 more required and the pitch beginning to show signs of variable bounce and wear, the task ahead is monumental.
All eyes now turn to Jasprit Bumrah, who will take the new ball first thing on Day 5. The Indian spearhead has already proven lethal in this match and will be key if India are to break through early and push for victory.
With one full day remaining and everything on the line, the first Test is set for a dramatic finish. England chasing history, and India chasing the perfect start to the series.
