India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir offered a blunt assessment of his side’s five-wicket defeat to England in the opening Test at Headingley, calling for greater intent and a 'ruthless mindset' as the series heads to its second chapter.

“This wasn’t just about playing good cricket for four days. Test matches are won by landing the final punch — we didn’t,” Gambhir said in a no-nonsense post-match interaction.

India had posted a daunting 371-run target, but were undone by Ben Duckett’s fluent 149 and an unbroken 119-run stand between Joe Root and debutant Jamie Smith. Despite controlling much of the match, India failed to create sustained pressure on the final day, something Gambhir was quick to highlight.

“We needed to push for 580, not settle for 470. It’s not just about scoring runs or taking wickets...it’s about how and when you do it,” he said, referring to India’s inability to capitalise on strong positions.

The coach refrained from blaming individuals. He backed Shubman Gill’s captaincy debut and clarified that Jasprit Bumrah’s workload had been pre-planned. “We’re not here to panic. But we’re also not here to applaud effort alone. Test cricket demands results,” he added.

India’s bowlers, especially in the final innings, struggled for penetration. With Bumrah going wicketless and the others offering little threat, England chased down the target with surprising ease.

Gambhir stressed the need for sharper thinking, particularly in closing out matches overseas. “The belief must be matched by application. We were too passive when the game called for boldness.”

India will now look to regroup before the second Test in Birmingham, with the coach making it clear that tactical changes may follow, but the real shift must be mental. “This team has the ability. What we need now is conviction. Not just across four days, but till the very last session.”
