India stormed to a historic 336-run win over England in second Test match at Edgbaston, levelling the five-match series 1-1 with a performance defined by Shubman Gill’s twin centuries and Akash Deep’s sensational ten-wicket match haul.
Chasing an improbable target of 608, England folded for 271 despite Jamie Smith’s fighting 88. Resuming the final day at 72/3, the hosts lasted for just over two sessions before succumbing to the relentless pressure exerted by the Indian attack.
Akash Deep was the standout performer with the ball. He dismantled England’s resistance with a four-wicket burst on the final morning, finishing with 6/99 in the second innings and 10 wickets in the match -- the best by an Indian pacer in England since 1986.
India’s dominance was built on the back of an exceptional batting effort. Shubman Gill led from the front with scores of 267 and 161, becoming the first Indian since Sunil Gavaskar to score a double century and a 150+ in the same Test.
England’s much-vaunted batting line-up never truly recovered from a top-order collapse in the first innings, where Mohammed Siraj ripped through the middle order to claim 6/63. While Ben Stokes and Smith briefly resisted in the second innings, they were undone by some sharp pace and disciplined bowling.
This was India’s first Test victory at Edgbaston, a venue where they had never previously won in seven attempts. It also marked their third-largest win by runs in Test history.
With the series now level, attention shifts to the third Test at Lord’s, starting July 12. England will look to regroup quickly, while India will hope their momentum continues in the heart of London.
